How to Layer Waffle Tops for Fall

A lightweight waffle top can be the starting point for a fall outfit. Add a thin layer underneath when you want more coverage, then choose a jacket with room through the shoulders and arms. Keep the trouser shape visible so the layers feel deliberate.

Start with the waffle top's own shape

Choose a base layer that sits smoothly

A thin, relatively close-fitting base can add coverage without crowding a boxy top. Check the neckline as well as the hem: a visible crew neck creates a different look from a layer that stays hidden.

Put both pieces on and move your arms. If the underlayer bunches at the shoulder or pulls the waffle top out of shape, try a lighter or less bulky option. You should be able to adjust or remove a layer without rearranging the whole outfit.

Add a jacket with enough sleeve room

A jacket needs space for the top underneath, especially around the upper arms. Try it fastened as well as open. Reach forward, sit down and bend your elbows; pulling across the back or tightness at the armhole is a sign to reconsider the combination.

• Can you fasten the jacket and move your arms freely?

• Can you remove a layer comfortably when you move indoors?
